The Protein Smoothie Formula

Not a smoothie recipe — the smoothie formula: liquid + frozen fruit + protein + one boost, in that order, blend until the vortex runs smooth. Learn the four slots once and you'll never look up a smoothie again. ~30 grams of protein before you've said a full sentence out loud.

5 minutes · Low cleanup · Protein-forward · serves 1 · ~30g protein; ~45g with a scoop of protein powder

Cook Mode walks these one at a time, with timers and a way out when things go sideways.

The idea

A formula with slots beats a recipe with rules. Liquid at the blades is the only technique a smoothie ever needed.

Substitutions

  • the whole recipePB CUP: milk + frozen banana + Greek yogurt + peanut butter + cocoa. The one Madeleine will drink. Tastes like dessert, ~32g protein.
  • the whole recipeBERRY STANDARD: milk + frozen mixed berries + Greek yogurt + oats. The everyday default. Oats make it hold you until lunch.
  • the whole recipeGREEN ONE: milk + frozen mango + Greek yogurt + big handful of spinach. Mango completely hides the spinach. You cannot taste it. This is the whole trick.
  • the whole recipeMANGO LASSI-ISH: milk + frozen mango + extra yogurt + tiny pinch of ground cardamom. Goes with the biryani leftovers, honestly.
  • Greek yogurtcottage cheese. Sounds wrong, blends perfectly smooth, slightly more protein. Nobody can tell.

Tomorrow

  • Smoothies don't keep — but you can load the blender jar the night before (everything but liquid) and park it in the fridge. Morning-you adds milk and presses one button.

Freeze: Freeze extra into popsicle molds — Madeleine thinks they're dessert; they're yogurt and fruit.

Drink it now. A stored smoothie separates into science.

Make ahead

Portion smoothie kits into freezer bags — fruit, oats, spinach — so mornings are: bag, milk, yogurt, blend.
