Why does the app say these aren't different recipes?

Rice + protein + vegetable + fresh thing + sauce. One pattern, endless dinners.

Rice + protein + vegetable + fresh thing + sauce or acid. That's it. Chicken-avocado-lime-yogurt, salmon-cucumber-soy-lime, beef-cabbage-sesame, beans-egg-salsa — those aren't four recipes. They're one pattern wearing four outfits.

This is the most important idea in the whole app: recipes are instances, patterns are knowledge. Learn a recipe and you can make one dinner. Learn the pattern and you can make dinner out of nearly any fridge on earth.

The pattern works because it's balanced by construction — starch for satisfaction, protein for substance, vegetable for freshness, the fresh thing for contrast, and sauce or acid to tie it together. When you improvise a bowl and it tastes complete, that's why.

Pasta has an equation too. So do tacos, stir-fries, soups, and frittatas. The First 20 Dinners are secretly a tour of equations.
